In 2003 I started my first WordPress blog. This is one of the pages on that blog!
Richard Brown is a lovely name. I think it sits on the tongue and rolls out and into the world. I reckon on trying to be like that. Loving, sitting and rolling. Loving because I think we should all be loving, sitting because I love to chat, and rolling because to be honest my biggest ambition concerns being a good husband, a great son and a loyal brother. If I die a pauper but people say that I was all three I think I die a rich man!
42 going on 10 but rarely older than that, greying at the temples (rather wise I think!), getting cuddly round the waste and finding it hard to run a mile let alone 10, I find life getting better year by year.
I love the word Awesome. God is an awesome God. He is both fearful and loving.
Dennis the Menace and his friend were coming out of Mrs Brown house having been given a biscuit. Somewhat confused his friend asked, “Is it because we were good that Mrs Brown gave us a biscuit?”
Dennis promptly replied, “No it is because Mrs Brown is good that we got given a biscuit!”
This story illustrates how it is with God. And yet this loving God is also a fearful God. What do I mean?
Well have you ever stood on top of a cliff and felt fear because of the long drop?
That is what I mean. It is good to fear God. God is both fearful and loving.
And so this month we come to ponder the possibilities that life is more than fun. It is hard graft and in this pleasure seeking environment we ought to be considering something more!
I like the idea of being happy – but making me happy is giving me chocolate. Now how many people have gone unhappy just to get me chocolate?
Or maybe making me happy is going on holiday – so do I have the right to go on holiday when my neighbour lives in one room with her three kids because the council hasn’t got the money to re-home her?
I cannot change the world so I may as well have my chocolate and holiday…..
No as an individual I cannot change the world but where would we be without Emily Pankhurst, Ghandi, Martin Luther King and William Wilberforce to name but a few. These people (individuals!) decided not to accept the world around them and to change it.
Jesus also changed the world. He decided to give his life so that I can be happy… No he wanted to give me joy. Joy is much more than just happiness. It is a quality and not simply an emotion. It is grounded in God himself. It is something dynamic not static.
Do you want to be happy – eat chocolate and go on holiday or whatever it is that makes you happy. Do you want joy. Meet Jesus.

It is fun for me to read this and see how I was thinking over 10 years ago. It is interesting…..
